The Best Superhero Movies Coming Our Way In 2009!
This week I’m going to be talking about the upcoming Superhero Movies for late 2008 and 2009. Buckle your seatbelts, kiddies.
The Punisher 2 (Airs: 5th December 2008)
Those who enjoyed the first Punisher will be pleased to hear that the second instalment, starring the ever popular anti-hero Frank Castle, is due to air late this year. The story continues to follow Castle’s vengeance and massacres as he brutally attacks a mafia mob, accidentally killing an undercover FBI agent.
Oops.
The Fed’s ex-partner chases Castle to bring him to justice; but the Punisher has already sated his lust for vengeance by this point and is willing to holster his guns…until someone kidnaps the wife and children of the agent he ‘accidentally’ massacred. It sounds rather predictable and a bit of an obvious gore fest but I’m sure that undying fans of the first film will enjoy it.
Watchmen (Airs: March 6th 2009)
It goes without saying that this is probably one of the most anticipated films for 2009 for most comic book geeks. It could even be comparable to the excitement I felt for The Dark Knight this year, and as that didn’t disappoint, I’m cautiously optimistic that this one won’t.
Watchmen is set in an alternate version of 1985 America, where seeing a superhero walking down the road is as normal as seeing a drunken staggering 15 year old…depending on where you live, of course. It follows the ‘washed up’ masked vigilante Rorschach, who’s former colleague was murdered – and Rorschach wants to put an end to all superheroes, past and present. He teams up with a ‘ragtag’ group of retired superheroes (and I must point out that only one of them has proper ‘powers’) to ultimately discover that there will be disastrous consequences for the future.
For me, I can imagine it being like a really serious version of Mystery Men. Which is a good thing. But I can imagine that it’s going to be a huge hit.
Whether comic book geek or not, I reckon you’ll appreciate this one. Plus there’s Carla Gugino in tight lycra for all those guys who need an extra bit of convincing.
X Men Origins: Wolverine (Airs: May 1st 2009)
I’ve already discussed this film in one of my articles, and expressed my concerns about it. The storyline (obviously) follows the life of Logan before he was the Wolverine which you saw in the previous 3 movies. It explains about his past with Viktor Creed (who eventually becomes Sabretooth) and the Weapon X experimentation. Plus there is the added bonus – for all those Remy fan girls – of Gambit making his debut. Why now, I can’t begin to imagine. But that’s another argument. You will also see Silverfox for the first (and last) time in this movie.
It all sounds good from the synopsis, but based on the other 3 films, I can only sit and despair when I think about it.
The Spirit (Airs: June 16th 2009)
To be directed by…FRANK MILLER. Screenplay written by…FRANK MILLER. If this one isn’t good then I’ll eat my hat (again). The story follows a rookie cop who returns from the other side as ‘The Spirit’.
His mission? To fight the bad forces from the shadows of Central City. Duh.
His trials? Hoards of beautiful women who either want to seduce him, love him or kill him. Duh.
It’s like James Bond, only cooler and more ghostly. I can honestly say that this one has all the makings of a classic. Need more convincing? Four words for you; starring Samuel L Jackson.
GI Joe: Rise of Cobra (Airs: August 14th 2009)
Did everyone (like me, ashamedly) think that GI Joe was a name?
Well apparently it stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity. So there.
Ahem. Anyway, GI Joe is set to air late next year, directed by Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Deep Rising, Van Helsing…oh dear). The story revolves around an international co-ed who are battling against Cobra; an elite evil organisation headed by a Scottish arms dealer. Other things to mention…it stars Brendan Fraser, of course.
Well there’s only one question on my mind. What the heck does Cobra stand for?
Nat’s Notes
What would I pick out of these for my 2009 box office breaker? Well it’s a difficult choice actually because I’m torn between two. I think that Watchmen will be the one because it looks so epic and fantastic, but I have to admit that I’m equally as excited about The Spirit because Frank Miller is one of my heroes.
I’m intrigued to see what Gavin Hood does with X men Origins, but I’m also a little worried as well. I’ll probably go and see it, but maybe I’ll bring a cushion to hide behind. You know, just in case.
