Wii Sports Is The Best Selling Game Ever!

Well, well, well, I suppose there is no accounting for taste after all is there?

Although it’s not official yet but Wii Sports is on target, (if it isn’t already) to be the best selling game of all time!!!

I’m sorry about the extra exclamation marks there but come on?

Wii Sports?

Best selling game ever?

Now, the previous number one was Super Mario Bros which sold 40 million copies and although there are some similarities in how both Super Mario Bros and Wii Sports were/are distributed (i.e; most people got the games free with their consoles) I never had a problem with the original Super Mario Bros walking around with the ‘Best Selling Game Ever‘ title because at the end of the day it was a classic game in every sense of the phrase.

But I do have a problem with Wii sports.  I own a Wii and played Wii Sports, like everybody else; the moment I got the console home and yeah, for the next couple of hours I enjoyed myself but, and this is the truth, it is now a year later and I haven’t played it since that first day.

Wii Sports for me is hard to define.  To me it’s more a tech demo than a game, it’s a sneaky peak into what the Wii can do so to call it a game, for me personally, is an insult to real games.  I just think that it would be  interesting to see how Wii Sports would do in the wild.  If Wii Sports didn’t come free with most Wii’s would people buy it and more importantly would people be satisfied with their purchase?

My point, I think, is you can have fun with Wii Sports but it just doesn’t feel like a game to me.

Now Super Mario Bros was a game, a gamers game and as a “game” Super Mario Bros proved itself over and over again, it earned its place at the top of the food chain with good old fashioned hard graft which saw it released on a multitude of platforms over the course of 28 years.  It worked hard for its figures so for Wii Sports to take its crown without ever having to prove itself by leaving the cosy arms of the bundle pack  is somewhat annoying to me.

It’s like Titanic all over again!
