Job Cuts All Over The Place – But Sega Soars!
Wherever I seem to look these days there are jobs being axed all over the place. The games industry is suffering hard and I am continually reading headlines of companies which are having to cut back on their staff.
- EA are planning to lay-off staff at Black Box, Tiburon and Pandemic – a cut of approx 10% or 1000 people.
- Eidos, publisher of Tomb Raider are closing their Manchester studio, dedicated to casual games and mobile games. This follows a job cut at Crystal Dynamics, the actual studio in charge of Miss Croft.
- Microsoft Flight Sim division are cutting 1400 jobs, from the entertainment and devices division.
- Microsoft is also cutting Xbox 360 jobs by 5000 staff at least.
- Sony have also jumped on the axing bandwagon but not in the games division.
One of the only companies, of which I am aware, that is not having job cuts is (surprisingly) Sega Europe. They claim to be “in great shape”, and have ranked fourth in the publishers share list for 2008 (After Nintendo, EA and Activision Blizzard). In fact, over the past 5 years their staff has increased from around 30 to 650.
Well, all I can say is that it’s a good thing Sonic can run so fast because apparently he’s dragging Sega along behind him at full speed.
