The Dutchie Sessions
I’m B, and so long as the powers that be are happy to let my inane ramblings grace their Nerdle pages then I’m gonna serve up some Musical Truth.
Not to be confused with anyone passing a dutchie on the left hand side, or anything else for that matter, it’ll be just what I think about music I’m listing to, gigs, new releases and general news I think you should at least have knowledge about.
Useful or not.
I can’t get enough of music and I like pretty much anything, but free-form Jazz just confuses the shit out of me and mopey, oiled up, saccharin R&B makes me want to kill(mainly the people who made it, but there have been exceptions), so for my own sanity and your safety, they will have no place here.
Pretty much anything else goes.
Now, some of you will disagree with what I say and that’s fine, each to their own and all that…just know that you are wrong and I don’t really care.

News :
This week, claims that Milk-Mustached R&B crooner Chris Brown tried to beat some sense in to his chart monopolizing Missus Rhiannna, hit the headlines in a very cagey fashion.
She was reportedly choked and left unconscious when an argument escalated after leaving a pre-Grammy party.
Chris you twat!
What were you thinking?
Adele and Coldplay did well at the Grammys taking numerous awards home with them, as did one of my favourite producers Rick Rubin taking home ‘Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical’.
Michael Jackson has apparently contracted some sort of MRSA type Skin bug that has swollen and infected his face. How can they tell?
Limp Bizkit are reforming with the original line up….yawn…sorry, they are planing a new album and a world tour…coffee, please Griff.
Lily Allen’s new album, released on the 10th February in the US is selling for under $4. Hmmm.
The one and only Tom Jones, the Pontypridd Panty Pilferer, makes a heartfelt comment about the fact that he “would love to play Glastonbury Festival this year.’ Go on Eavises, go and get ‘im!.
Miles Davis – Kind of Blue 50th Anniversary : CD
Now, I listen to a lot of different stuff, most of which my Father would put firmly in the ‘Shit’ genre, but even he wouldn’t dare say anything about this Man, and neither would any self respecting musician. Whether you like Jazz or hate it, I challenge you to listen to this and have a bad word to say about it.
A lot of Jazz is just not my cup of tea me if I’m honest, but listening to this both at work and at home this week just made me want a ridiculously small coffee drink, a black polo neck and some form of lengthy, colored cigarette.
Its chill music, reading music, Sunday morning music.
Kind of Blue‘s medium tempo, mode driven improvisations were the epitome of cool at the time, with the production and players to match.
John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley out front with Miles, Jimmy Cobb on Drums, pianist Bill Evans and the amazing Paul Chambers on Bass.
In 1959 when it was released – about the same time as Dave Brubeck’s Time Out,(for all you Jazzers out there) - Brubeck’s record sold more, but these days, I’m happy to report that Kind of Blue is rightly placed as the best-selling Jazz Album in history.
Just get it.

Milloy – Creating Problems while Practising Solutions: CD
I was a huge fan of the first full length album offering by Wakefield, UK based punk rockers Milloy, and I was well excited when my fellow music lovin’ compadre’ (who shall be known as ‘El Dan’ from now on) strolled in and delivered this news to me on a Monday morning. “B, I have the new Milloy Album and they are playing in Newport in a couple of weeks“.
Now, this is the best Musical news I have heard in ages, so the album went on, and tickets for the upcoming show were purchased, so expect a gig review next week.
Anyone already savvy with Milloy will be hoping that their sonic mix hasn’t changed a bit, as they create a pretty unique one.
For anyone else, this is a Punk band who want to Rock you. The combination of super-tight bass and drums, duelling melodic punk/rock guitars and possibly the best British punk vocal delivery ever with a slight Northern twang, has me smiling straight away.
They have lost nothing since 2005′s More Than A Machine and its subsequent re-release in 2007, and this new album delivers in spades. Stand out tracks for me are Tracks 3 and 5, but the entire Album is a blinder, if a little short but you begin to get used to this with punk/rock bands – more of an observation than a criticism.
I’m looking forward to getting sweaty and beer soaked, bouncing up and down with a venue full of mentalists in Newport on Friday.
See them live in Newport on Friday 20th Feb 2009 at Le Pub.

This Weeks Releases…as I see ‘em :
Notable new releases this week include Albums by Erykah Badu, Empire of the Sun and Morrissey.
New single releases should yield tracks from Glasvegas, Craz…sorry Katy Perry, Brakes and The Days amongst others.
However much you dislike her, watch Katy Perry release another tune catchy enough to drive you insane by the 3rd time you hear it, lets hope Aussie band Empire of the Sun do well as their debut Single is worth a listen, and love him or hate him, Mozza needs a decent album out, as in my opinion he hasn’t had one since The Smiths. Handbags out…aaaannd fight!
What ya sayin?

Nice work there B. Talking of Dutchie, why not try “Petit Fours” by Grand Duchy, out this week? Black Francis (of Pixies fame) and his missus join forces for an intensely catchy set of brooding 80′s synth rock tunes. “Lovesick” is particularly fine.
I don’t understand a word of what you just said Smugpie.
Cool column – Chris Brown had better hide from Jay-Z
Erykah badu, that should be an interesting listen!
