Week Three in the Big Brother Nerdle Blog. Nat is in the diary room.

Why am I in the diary room? To write my blog diary. And here it is.

Nat’s Gaming Week

Meep. I’m ashamed to say that, due to the fact that I had a friend down to stay, I had to put the gaming consoles on the back burner for a while whilst I entertained her. I will update you next week, when I’ve had time to get a bit more up to date with some of the more recent games, and give you some feedback. Promise. Cross my heart.

Nat’s Filmic Week

Well, film-wise I have once again been a bit retarded, so I’m going to firstly talk a little bit about my newly found love for a sitcom. If I say the words it’s Business time, would that make you whip out a pad and pencil or suck some helium before replying in a squeaked repeat it’s Business, it’s Business tiiiime? That’s right, I’m talking about none other than New Zealand’s folk parody duo Flight of the Conchords. If you have seen them, then read on. If not then have YouTube at the ready please, because otherwise you won’t understand what the heck I’m talking about!

The highly praised first series grasped my attention last year, when a rather obsessed friend pointed them out to me. I watched the aforementioned Business Time about 600 times, dissolving into hysteria at the brilliant facial expressions of the one and only Jemaine Clement. (No, I didn’t miss out the R, common spelling error…it is in fact spelt Jemaine) Anyway, to cut a long story short, I was showing it to another friend recently – you know, passing on the hilarity – and it suddenly made me really want to watch the series, so I caved and bought it.

I think what I love most about Flight of the Conchords – other than the fact that Bret McKenzie is my one true love – is that they are both absolute geeks trying to make it as musicians. You just feel…akin to them somehow. Their conversations are, I’m ashamed to admit, quite similar to the ones that I had with my friends at University. It’s that kind of aimless banter which is so compelling to watch. Of course, when coupled with catchy yet comical songs which could rival Tenacious D, it makes for a brilliant sitcom. I would recommend it to anyone.

Other than that, I suppose this is topical with regards to the article that it’s hit the billion dollar mark and that the Oscars are coming up. I rewatched The Dark Knight again – only for the 3rd time I might add – and I came to a strange conclusion which had never really struck be before. The first time I watched it, I was blown away by the whole thing. The second time I watched it, I was able to focus on narrative and pick up bits that I hadn’t before. The most recent time, I was able to analyse it properly, seeing as how the glamour-factor had worn off. To be honest, I shocked myself slightly.

I still love The Dark Knight in a lot of ways, but I realised that the reasons behind my love of it were not the real reasons that someone should love a film. Why I enjoy TDK is mostly down to the superb acting from not only the brilliant Heath Ledger, but also the equally fantastic Aaron Eckhart. See my issue really is that I don’t feel that they’ve got Batman right. I didn’t like Batman Begins at all, so I was really sceptical about TDK from the start. I realise now that Nolan still hasn’t got it right, but it’s overshadowed by the fantastic acting from the villains. So my analysis question was this – if there were different actors and different villains but the same storyline, would I have enjoyed it?

Short answer: No.

I don’t like the way in which they have portrayed Bruce Wayne. He’s a selfish playboy, who is basically an arrogant moron. It upsets me because I find myself feeling more drawn to The Joker, and yet Batman has always been my favourite comic book character. I never understood why this was until my third viewing of the movie, but I’ve realised that it was all down to the fact that no one has ever managed to pull of a good version of Bruce/Batman in live action form.

Rant over, it was a good movie, and I hope that Ledger gets his posthumous Oscar. But I am not disappointed in the least that The Dark Knight isn’t up for best picture award, because frankly I don’t think that it deserves it anymore.

Basically, I want to briefly discuss the upcoming release of the Nintendo DSi. I don’t really see the point in upgrading from my DS because the other functions are attainable on other pieces of hardware that I own. Am I theonly person that sees this as an issue? Other people seem to be perfectly happy to have 6 pieces of junk that do the same thing, whereas I see it as a waste of money. I suppose that in my grand age of 21 I am becoming miserly. I used to see the cool side of things, but now the pound signs seem to appear increasingly…

I’ll catch you next week for more ramblage of the nerdy kind.
