After my recent rant about Watchmen, I’m going to be fair and report a bit of news on it. Zac Snyder has decided to release (as part of the upcoming DVD) a short piece called Tales of the Black Freighter, which is animated. Classically animated. On paper, with pencils.

I am so happy, I could cry right now. Why this type of animation has died is beyond me as I love it – it has character and personality as well as always filling me with a warm feeling of the known. I think thats what I hate about CG sometimes, it can fill me with this cold feeling. CG has the tendancy to be somewhat clinical at times – especially the films done by the non-mainstream animation studios (i.e. Dreamworks or Disney Pixar).

But anyway, fans of the comic/film will be pleased to hear this news. Snyder, to his credit, has funded it himself via his own Animation studio in Korea. It should be an interesting one to watch – it’s rather reminiscent of the sudden release of Gotham Knight after The Dark Knight though, isn’t it? Of course, you could say that it all started back with The Animatrix, which I actually do own and love.

Despite my dislike of the recent movie, I’d still watch Tales of the Black Freighter even if it was purely to see the animation.

Sad but true.
