The Dutchie Sessions – Get Psyched!
My favourite TV show these days is How I Met Your Mother. Because it’s absolutely brilliant. And because Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris, formerly Dr. Doogie Howser) is damn funny.
What does this have to do with music, you ask?
In season 1, episode 11, entitled “Limo” (check it out, bitchez!) , Barney introduces his own personal Get Psyched Mix. Why? Well…
“People often ask me, Barney how is it that you’re so pysched so much of the time?! And the answer is right here, my own personal get pysched mix. Now people often think a good mix should rise and fall, but people are wrong. It should be all rise, baby. Now prepare yourselves for an audio journey into the white hot center of adrenaline. Bam!”

That was awesome! Psyched yet?
OK, so here’s the deal. As much as I love the classics, I’m looking to build my own Get Psyched Mix from contemporary music. There’s so many great new artists out there (and that I’ll be writing about in this column) that there’s no reason why we can’t come up with something pretty kickass using only (relatively) new music. So if you have ideas or thoughts on great new tunes you think I should include in the mix, drop me a line. The only rule is that they be no more than 5 years old, so 2004 and onward.
And to start things off, here’s a candidate for the mix, a great track from Ladyhawke called “Magic”:

I have had two "get psyched" mixes throughout my life. One was when I was about 14/15 and it mainly contained G'n'(f)R songs (Get in the Ring anyone?).
And then later on when I was a student I used to listen to crazy electronica to hype myself before going to work, remembering this is around 1996/7 I listened to Double 99 – Rip Groove and/or Cafe del Mar-Cafe del Mar…. ooh and if I really needed a kick up the ass CJ Bolland's "The Prophet" always hit the spot! My housemate used to listen to Speedy J for the same effect…
That last paragraph is really an education in late 90's electronica, one you one get from Amazon/HMV!
