Cameron Looks Back At The Station Agent!
One thing I have become increasingly irritated by is the blockbuster Hollywood films that makes it in to the cinemas these days. Movies are being made purely to make money and not being used as an art form as I believe they should be. Which is why I have decided to review, even ‘plug’ those lesser known films that may not have even been shown in many cinemas, films that should be given a spot in cinemas even now. First on a list is a film that made me life until I cried: ‘The Station Agent’ (2003). This film is quality, and I don’t mean that in a gangster wannabe “quality mate” way, it truly is a fantastic film.
The story is of a dwarf, Finbar McBride, who is also a train enthusiast. His business partner and friend dies, leaving him an old station agents office in his will. Throughout the film we follow him as his antisocial and often brash behaviour develops in to an open and warm friendship with Olivia and Joe. Joe being Finbar’s complete opposite as a loud extroverted ‘Jack the Lad’, and Olivia an emotionally unstable woman recently split from her husband. All three character’s had some need of emotional stability, Joe’s dad was critically ill in hospital, Olivia’s son had died and obviously Finbar’s friend’s death and the constant struggle of dealing with being a dwarf. In some way each of the character’s gives a different dynamic to the other, and so in being three very fractured and needy souls and yet together they make the perfect trio.
If you’re looking for a film with a deep mystical plot, and millions of dollars worth of special effects, then this isn’t the film for you. I love it because it’s simple, and it took me through all my emotions during the entire 88 minutes. I was confused at some points, then grieved, joyous and then empathetic. I engaged with the entire journey of twists and turns, and was left with one word on my lips when the credits rolled; “Brilliant!”
