Online Gaming 4 Dummies – More Reasons to Ignore Your Children

So I know I promised two reviews last week. Well, I was surprised to find out that as of Wednesday, April 29th, Free Realms went into Open Beta! So I instead decided to post this week’s post and then my review tomorrow, to ease my work load, in addition to still providing good content.

WowPod – Another Reason to Forget About Your Children

Yes. It is true. World of Warcraft, the world’s most popular (and addictive), MMORPG is now coming to your IPhone. A group of students at MIT have developed a new app, allowing you to access play WoW from your IPhone. In actuality, this is an independent gaming world of WoW, but the WoWPod (as the name suggests) has an engine and system based on the game, so you’ll notice no difference. The word is still out on weather or not Blizzard will allow such an app to exist, as they have a history of cracking down on “WoW look alikes.” However, the game has still been developed and is planned to release soon, much to the detriment of deprived families of WoW players everywhere

Stargate SG-1 Goes Online

The widely popular Sci-Fi series, Stargate SG-1, is set to have an MMO released in the next two years based on the Stargate universe. The

game is being developed with a new take on the class system, similar to that of Final Fantasy XI Online, but with a slight twist. Instead of your usual “tanks”, “magic”, and “ranged” classes, every character will be highly flexible with customizable trees, allowing for hybrid characters and unique takes on the “cookie-cutter” classes. The game will also feature adaptable AI and unique quest lines. No release date has been announced.

DC Universe – Batman DOES Pwn Superman

The much anticipated DC Universe Online is set for a release some time in late 2009 or early 2010. The next in a long line of hero game MMOs, DC Universe is going to bring you the same customizability of building your own heroes, similar to that of City of Heroes and Champions Online. However, with this customizability, you get to play alongside (and in some cases, against) you’re favorite DC characters. This may finally bring an end to the Batman vs Superman debate.

Star Trek Finally Gets Its Props

Okay, so I’ll be the first to admit I’m not the biggest Star Trek fan, in fact, I only own the Next Generation on DVD, while I own all the Star Wars movies on Blue-Ray, however, I am excited about the upcoming Star Trek MMO, planned for a 2010 release. The game will be based around the Star Trek universe and features content similar to that of EVE Online. Fast paced combat situations on the ground will be balanced with a ship you command (with and NPC crew), and will feature a unique galactic economy, making for a complex system of buying, selling, and trading. The game screams WoW and EVE Online, however it seems like the content will still retain some originality. In addition, the economy remains to be a feature of much debate, as players are concerned over “marker crashers”, trolls who purposing sell goods at levels tons lower than what their worth, resulting in a crash of that particular good.
