The new Star Trek film with it’s alternate reality has opened up a new world for the Enterprise. J.J. Abrams has now said that there’s a possibility for the return of William Shatner and maybe the Captains’ old enemy Khan in the sequel.

He had this to say…

“The fun of this [new Star Trek] is that the destiny of these
characters is in their hands – it’s not constrained by the pre-existing
films or TV series, believe me, whether it’s William
Shatner or Khan… it would be ridiculous to not be open to those
ideas.”The point of creating this independent timeline is to not have
restrictions [and] one of those restrictions was that Kirk was dead.”

Screenwriter Alex Kurtzman advised that it was planned to have Shatner as a hologram projection speaking to Zachary Quinto’s young Spock in the film.
