Could Resident Evil 5 Be Coming To The Wii?
Despite everybody and their dog knowing that the recent Resident Evil 5 could NOT work on the Wii, thanks largely to the lack of power inside Nintendo’s little white box, rumors are beginning to surface which suggests that Capcom are thinking about giving the port a go anyway.
Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata recently commented on the possibility of a Wii version -
“Hypothetically speaking, the Resident Evil 4 engine would work perfectly for replicating the gameplay but we would never be able to recreate the graphical quality. A gun shooting game like Darkside Chronicles makes much more sense for Wii so, in short, Resident Evil 5 Wii Edition isn’t likely to happen. Having said that, Cavia has surprised us with the quality of graphics in Darkside Chronicles, so it may actually be possible after all…”
Now, forgive me for stating the obvious but an on-rails shooter, regardless of how pretty it looks, should in no way convince anybody, especially somebody within the games industry and who should know better, that the same graphical output could be matched in a free-roaming game.
Seriously, whether or not Darkside Chronicles does look amazing, it has no bearing on the Wii’s ability to handle a Resident Evil 5 port.
Capcom would be better off developing a brand new game built on the Resident Evil 4 engine. A straight port of Resident Evil will only showcase how graphically inferior the Wii is to its rivals whereas a brand new adventure would go some way in covering over the cracks in the Wii’s visual department.
