When the news broke a couple of weeks back that the mock trailer Robert Rodriguez filmed for his Grindhouse project Machete, was getting made as a full length feature, my geek alarm started wailing like a mofo (I’ve always wanted to write that).

But secretly I feared that, especially after watching the trailer over and over again, Machete would be just too weak of a concept for Rodriguez to run with, and the project would simply fade into development hell.

No such bad fortune!

Not only is the production officially on “full steam ahead,” but Hollywood legend Robert De Niro looks set to star as the crooked politician who is hunting for Danny Trejo’s’ Machete.

I can’t begin to tell y’all how excited I am with this news, I just know that Machete is going to be one of my ‘guilty pleasures’ of 2010.

Filming begins on July 29.
