Behind The Screen!
Welcome, wipe your feet on the way in, and welcome to this week’s news!
So first of all – since when do we check if an athlete is a man or a woman AFTER a race? Surely there must be some sort of check beforehand as to whether this big hulk of a creature is in fact of the correct gender? Also, i know of no man who, if they had unwittingly got into the woman’s changing room, wouldn’t be sniggering like a child at the mere sight of a side boob; and would therefore be pretty obvious at a track meet. I don’t believe it anyway, I’m sure shes just an unattractive, athletic, larger woman – just like David Walliams.
Also very exciting at this weeks athletics was a new world record in the 100 metres by Usain Bolt. Bolt by name, bolt by nature eh? I always back Tyson Gay myself, ‘cos if I was his coach just before the starter pistol I’d shout ‘Mike’s finally here, and he looks REALLY pissed off’
Ok, enough of this slack jawed gibber jabber….
Former ‘Buffy’ star James Marsters has signed up for a role on Syfy’s ‘Caprica’, says Entertainment Weekly.
According to reports, the 46-year-old actor, who memorably played Spike in Joss Whedon’s ‘Buffy’, will feature in at least three episodes in the role of Barnabus Greeley, a dangerous terrorist leader.
He will be joined in the ‘Battlestar Galactica’ prequel by Patton Oswalt, Sasha Roiz, Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker.
Marsters has also appeared in ‘Torchwood’, ‘Angel’ and ‘Smallville’ – and in all of them, for me, he was still ‘Spike’ doing something else. It was kind of like watching your daughter trying on her mums oversized clothes and going ‘aww look at her playing at being a grown up’. Thats the thing when you become so famous at one particular role, like Matthew Perry as ‘Chandler’ or Jenna Elfman as ‘annoying woman’.
Caprica is slated to begin airing on Syfy in the U.S on Friday, January 22, 2010.
Tabloid reports have claimed that Noel Fielding has been axed as a team captain on BBC Two music quiz ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’.
The ‘Mighty Boosh’ comic was expected to become a permanent fixture on the series after previously appearing as a guest a few times, however, the BBC has pulled him off the show following drugs revelations over the weekend, according to The Sun newspaper – who never make stuff up, honestly.
Fielding owned up to taking cocaine, ecstasy, acid and magic mushrooms in an interview with the News of the World on the weekend.
“Noel is absolutely gutted,” said a source. “As soon as news of his drug use broke he was told that he was no longer wanted on Buzzcocks. BBC bosses are very strict when it comes to drug users being on the screen…He’s really disappointed because he was looking forward to the gig so much.”
Look at the guy. Look at his show. How would you not think he does any or all of the above!? You’ve gotta be doing magic mushrooms to make sense of ‘The Boosh’!
One of the more strange stories appeared this week, in that former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell has signed up for the next season of ABC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’. The mean looking, mohicaned Ultimate Fighting legend is more used to making people see stars than dancing with them, but hey i guess this is a promotional move by the fast growing sport in order to gain a bit of mainstream acceptance or notoriety. “The Iceman” will be competing against the likes of Kathy Ireland, Macy Gray, Mya, Donny Osmond, Kelly Osbourne and Tom DeLay, amongst others.
“I want to win,” Liddell told UFC.com. “I don’t like losing in anything, so I’ll work as hard as they’ll let me.”
Liddell has been asked to do the show before, but said that he turned it down because “it would be too much time to take off from training for fights. Now I don’t have any fights coming up and I’m not training, so it’s something to do.”
“I’m gonna go out, be myself, and show what kind of people we do have in this sport,” he said. “I’m sure the reaction will be mixed (among fight fans). My friends are gonna be excited and I’ll never hear the end of it because they’ll make fun of me, but it should be fun and I think everyone will like it.”
I think there’s no harm in it, and although there’ll be some who think he has sold out, as i said earlier it’s good that the sport will achieve a bit more notoriety as a result. I really can’t see Chuck being any good though can you?!
Dancing With The Stars premieres on September 21st at 8 pm on ABC.
Looking forward to this – Channel 4 has announced a special week of 3D programming to celebrate 3D footage.
This autumn, viewers will be invited to don 3D glasses to watch the programmes – broadcast in ColorCode 3D – which include previously unseen footage of the Queen during her Coronation year. Can’t wait to get those 3-D Glasses on again! I used to love those when they came free with a magazine when i was a kid, it used to make it look like the words were jumping off the page. Saying that, that may have been my dyslexia.
The two hour-long episodes, titled ‘The Queen In 3D’, tell the story of two young men – director Bob Angell and cameraman Arthur Wooster, now in their 80s – who filmed a 3D colour newsreel they named Royal Review – boring i know, but hey it’s in 3D with 3D glasses on!
Dont worry – the special week will also see the transmission of ‘Derren Brown’s 3D Magic Spectacular’, ‘The Greatest Ever 3D Moments’ and several 3D movies!
Channel 4 said that the broadcasts will look almost like an ordinary image when viewed without glasses. However, the image is transformed when the viewer puts on ColorCodeViewer 3D glasses, which are equipped with special amber and blue filters. Everyone round to my house for beers and a 3D marathon!
Another quick scoop – this time for fans of Charlie Brooker and his shows. His Twitter page this Thursday reads ‘Can confirm: Gameswipe 1x50min special = coming soon; end-of-year Screenwipe special = Dec 09; Newswipe s2 = early 2010′ No need to say anymore really eh?
A few figures for you now – just really because im so pleased as a ‘CSI’ repeat defeated the nightly ‘Big Brother’ highlights show in the ratings on Saturday night in the UK! Five’s screening of the crime drama averaged 1.71m (8.8%) between 9.10pm and 10.10pm, outdoing the 1.52m (7.8%) audience for the latest BB update. How excellent is that? Surely the final nail in the coffin for the tired old freakshow, losing out to an old repeat even.
In the U.S a series-high 4.5 million viewers caught Sunday’s ‘True Blood’, which as we know is midway through Season 2. In gross audience–combining linear plays, DVR and HBO On Demand–’True Blood’ is averaging 11.4 million viewers per episode. Chunky.
But Dar, what do you recommend this week i hear you ask? Well, here’s a few things to have a butchers at -
- Monday at 9pm in the back and beyond on the Eden channel – sky 532 – sees repeats of ‘Last Man Standing’ the show in which contestants battle across the globe with different tribes etc to become the – well, the title. I fancy a trip down memory lane, some episodes were pretty good.
- Wednesday at 10pm on BBC2 sees the return of ‘Shooting Stars’ to our screens after a long absence. A long time kitcsh show, will it still hold the same draw or have we moved on? Would it be better left as a comedy classic? We shall see…..
- Thursday on Fiver – sky 176 – sees a candid interview with ‘The Beast’ and ‘Dirty Dancing’ star Patrick Swayze on his battle with pancreatic cancer and his future in TV.
Ok, there we go for another week – enjoy your weekend!
