Is The Silver Surfer Movie Dead?
A Silver Sufer movie which starts on Zenn-La will kick ass
Just prior to the release of The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, a lot of Marvel and Fox execs were getting pretty excited about the idea of a standalone Silver Surfer movie. Indeed, the more cynical among us felt that the only reason The Fantastic Four were given a second movie was so they could launch the Hollywood career of Norrin Radd a.k.a The Silver Surfer.
Well, it’s been a couple of years since the poorly-received Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer hit the silver screen and there’s been no sign of a Silver Surfer movie.
Writer J.Michael Straczynski has now revealed that the Silver Surfer project is currently in “limbo” over at Fox. Talking to Collider, this is what he said…
“What happened was when FF2 didn’t do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them to call into question a Silver Surfer movie. The script that I wrote picked up right where FF2 left off. So if they do a Silver Surfer film down the road, it’ll have to be its own separate things.”
But what about the man in the silver suit himself; Doug Jones? At the time of The Rise of the Silver Surfer it was reported that he’d signed up for two seperate Silver Surfer movies. Itsjustmovies caught up with him and asked him if he’d heard about any developments. This is what he had to say…
“There are still a couple of years left on their option for two more pictures with me, as a three-picture deal is quite standard when starting a franchise-potential character. But with all the ‘reboot’ talk of the Fantastic Four, I have no idea where that leaves the Silver Surfer end of things. I would love to revisit this character. I do love Norrin Radd,”
So, what does this all mean?
Personally, I don’t think we’ll hear anything until Iron Man 2 gets released. When Iron Man 2 kicks ass at the box office I can see some Fox exec greenlighting a rushed Silver Surfer movie which will ultimately flop. I don’t like Fox…
