My Top Ten Films Of The 80’s
As the end of the decade draws near I thought it would be a good idea to look back to the decade I was born, the 80’s, and write about my top ten movies from the decade, as I’ve got a lot love for the era.
So here is a look back to the decade that gave us the fall of the Berlin wall, Mr T and of course Transformers.
10. Short Circuit 2
Released in 1988, two years after the release of the original short circuit film the sequel finds the adorable Johnny 5 robot in New York. Being an $11 million robot in New York who has a penchant for “input” can only lead to a great family fun adventure for all. With a remake in the pipeline it looks like Johnny 5 may well be alive well into the next decade.

9. The Karate Kid
John Avildsen made this film after making the original Rocky film. The film saw the world introduced to Mr Miyagi (portrayed by Pat Morita) as well as ‘Daniel San’, (played by Ralph Macchio, who was 23 at the time of filming, though played a very convincing 15 year old). The Crane kick at the end has been re-enacted thousands of time in playgrounds all over the world.

8. First Blood
This 1982 release starring Sly Stallone in his prime introduced the world to the character of Rambo. This films success is that it works on many levels. The masterstroke of the director and producer was to make sure that Rambo himself doesn’t kill anyone (he just wounds them, badly) therefore endearing Rambo to the audience and of course keeping the door open for sequels the most recent being just over a year old.

7. Top Gun
An iconic eighties film that made a superstar of a young Tom cruise as well as Dr Green of ER fame. Inspired by an article in a magazine about a real-life American fighter pilot training facility. Its soundtrack is almost as well remembered as the homo-erotic tendencies of the film; well the 80’s was a very camp decade.

6. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Lucas and Spielberg teamed up to produce this classic from 1984, though there was no Nazi’s this film. The second in the franchise always seemed to me the darkest, especially watching this as a child and getting petrified with the idea that brown men might want to rip my heart out or enslave me (this really didn’t help trying to sleep when coming from a large Asian family).

5. Ghostbusters
Written and co-starred in by Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis this 1984 release is as much Sci-fi as it is comedy. A classic performance from Bill Murray sets the film up as one which can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With the popularity of the franchise having recently been tested with the release of a video game, plans are afoot to release a third instalment with the majority of the original cast returning sooner rather then later.

4. Rocky III
Another entry starring Stallone, which he also wrote. Personally I think this is the best of all the rocky films. It has everything you want from a Rocky film; Apollo Creed, a training montage, a great soundtrack, Hulk Hogan and Mr T. Released in 1982, this film manages to perfectly portray the greed and consumerism that became so important in the era.

3. Back to the Future
Marty McFly and the Doc’s time travelling adventure was so popular in 1985 it even prompted, the then President Reagan to quote the film in one of speeches. We saw Marty and the Doc travel back to 1955, mess with some pre-determined events sort it out and then get back to 1985 all with the help of there time travel enabled DeLorean.

2. Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
The third instalment of the original Star Wars trilogy saw the world introduced to Ewok’s as well as gave us a look inside Jabba’s palace. More importantly though the film saw Darth Vader redeem himself. By saving his son from death at the hands of Emperor, sacrificing himself in the process and destroying the Dark Side by killing the evil Palpatine.

1. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
The fifth instalment of the star wars saga which was of course the second of the series to be released revealed the biggest secret in the galaxy, that Darth Vader is infact Luke Skywalkers dad. We were also introduced to such great characters such as Yoda and Lando Calrissian. Empire strikes back, is the darkest film of the trilogy and expanded the Star Wars universe massively. With great performances from Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and James Earl Jones who plays the most evil man of the decade Darth Vader, making this the best film of the decade!
