Let the list making begin…

Between now and New Years Day, we here at Nerdles.com will share with you our favorite games of the year.

To begin with, we’re starting with Movie adaptations, check back daily for our other Bunch of Fives

5.Terminator: Salvation

tsalvationOkay, now I know this game has a lot of faults, most notable of which is the severe lack of different enemies but when a game is based on a franchise like Terminator: Salvation is, the designers can’t shoe-horn in a hell of a lot of new enemies.

For me, the fun in Terminator: Salvation was had in co-op. Single player and the game was just meh… but with a buddy in tow, the game suddenly became fun.

Deploying your buddy to draw the fire of the Terminators while you snuck up behind them and blasted their weak spots (their backs) was tremendous fun and really sucked me in. Perhaps it was my love of the Terminator universe that made me enjoy it more than I should have or perhaps it was because when the game was released, it was a quiet spot on the video game release calendar, whatever it was, I enjoyed my time (6 hours or so).

But. was it a good game?

In all the ways that count it probably wasn’t but then, how many games have you played that let you take out Terminators with your buddy?

4.Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen

troftfThis doesn’t happen very often but Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was actually better than the movie it was based on. (IMO)

There’s a lot of fun to be had with T:ROTF and it seems that the developers actually tried to make a decent game.

The gameplay on offer was pretty varied although ultimately, it failed to tick all the boxes needed to make a game great.

Throw in some severe repitition towards the game’s end and you end up with an experience that once finished, leaves a bitter taste in your mouth as you’re left with the lasting impression of “I can’t believe I invested so much of my time with this game.”

3.G-Force

gforceYou’re probably wondering why this is on the list but seriously guys, this is actually a pretty decent game.

Very much in the mold of the Ratchet and Clank series, G-Force makes no bones that it’s copying the famous Playtstation franchise and it’s all the better for it.

Add in some weird 3-D that actually works and you end up with an enjoyable 6-8 hour romp. Of course, I would have never played this if it were not for my anticipation for Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time but I did play it and I’m glad I did.

2.X-Men Origins: Wolverine

x-men-origins-wolverine-uncaged-edition-box-artThe movie was bunk but the game was good.

How often do we get to say that? (Obviously I’ve kind of already said it with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen)

But the truth of the matter is that X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a pretty decent game, one that even if you took away the subject matter would still leave you with a pleasurable experience.

The game did get repetitive though, and not in that good way like in Borderlands or any other grinder but in that way that finds you having to struggle through the final few stages not out of any real desire to finish the game out of enjoyment but out of a need to justify the time you spent with it.

1.Ghostbusters: The Video Game

gbFor capturing the pure essence of the property it’s based on, Ghostbusters: The Video Game tops this list.

Sure the gameplay was ropey and okay, if you took out the Ghostbusters it would probably just be a generic third-person shooter but on sheer charm alone, this movie adaptation (okay, I know it’s not based on a actual movie but you get what I mean) was, in my opinion, the best of the year.

Heck, just using the proton packs was fun enough to justify the top spot.

Games that just missed the cut..

Saw The Video Game – A pretty bland affair that although offered up some neat ideas, subsequently failed to execute them in way that made for an exciting game.

Avatar – The Game – This really is a sore point for me, Avatar – The Game should have been good, the developers had plenty of time to work on it so therefore had no excuses as to why it turned out as generic as it did. Wasted opportunity.
