Miyamoto Says That The Next Super Mario Game Could Have Online Multiplayer

new-super-mario-bros-wii-screenshot1 New Super Mario Bros Wii is by any standards an excellent game, though one thing is very noticeably missing and that is online multiplayer.

Sure, you can get four players around your TV but how likely are you to find four Mario players of the same skill level?

In my experience thus far, that is proving to be a very difficult scenario to realize.

Anyway, it seems that Shigeru Miyamoto is aware of our need to play Mario with complete strangers and has suggested that the next Super Mario Wii could very well incorporate online multiplayer.

This is what he said…

“It’s not for purely technological issues that [online play] wasn’t included.
After all, as you know, we already have online play in Smash Bros., and technologically speaking, I don’t think it’s creating a high amount of lag. It’s just a matter of our priorities when it comes to the creation of a game.
We just prioritised on making a multiplayer mode where four players can sit together and play while seeing each other’s faces,”

He went on to add…

“Because network environments are getting better and better every day, it may be possible in a future edition to incorporate that type of multiplayer online mode for a real-time action game.
But I am just talking about the technological aspect here. What’s more important, of course, is if it’s going to add to the fun aspect of the game.”

Shigeru Miyamoto was talking to the Official Nintendo Magazine.

One can only hope. It would certainly add to the difficulty of NSMBWii to have multiple people to play with. Only once was I capable of successfully pulling it off, and we made it all the way to world 7. 3 of us that is.

He needs to understand that just because we’re out of options, does not mean we’ll automatically gain the ability to find 3 other people out there willing to sit through an entire Mario game; Even if it is fun as hell. Online is a necessary feature.
