Robert Downey Jr Comments Throw Sherlock Holmes Sequel In Doubt

By Sock

sherlock-holmes-previewSherlock Holmes star Robert Downey Jr recently claimed that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective could be portrayed as gay and suggested that Holmes and his loyal sidekick Dr Watson actually share a homoerotic relationship.

In true Downey Jr fashion he actually went one step further and called Holmes a “butch homosexual”

Anyway, Andrea Plunket, who owns the US copyright for Sherlock Holmes is believed to be appalled at the comments and stated that if director Guy Ritchie plans to explore Holmes sexual relationship with Dr. Watson in any sequels, she will pull the plug on the project.

This is what she said…

“I hope this is just an example of Mr Downey’s black sense of humour. It would be drastic, but I would withdraw permission for more films to be made if they feel that is a theme they wish to bring out in the future. I am not hostile to homosexuals, but I am to anyone who is not true to the spirit of the books.”

  1. Common Sense says:

Oh man, what a moron that woman is, this film is already not true to the spirit of the books in so many ways, she’s obviously homophobic.

    • Real Common Sense says:

Hey, (Guy Who Thinks He Has) Common Sense — Who cares if she is homophobic or not? It was still a moronic thing for Robert D. Jr. to suggest.

You have to roll your eyes at people who giggle and suggest that anytime two men share a close relationship, it’s oh, so OBVIOUSLY homosexual! Give me an f’ing break. No wonder men today feel like they have to act like macho arseholes.

And hey, I’d pull the plug too, if someone tried to pull a publicity stunt like that with an iconic character that someone in my family created. Hey, I know! Let’s make a movie with Peter Pan screwing Wendy! Or he and the Lost Boys having orgies! What, if I don’t like the idea, it makes me a moron or a homophobe? Let’s try not to inject our 2010 fascinations and fads on a Victorian-era icon, mmkay?

      • Anonymous says:

I doubt highly it was a publicity stunt, or that he was suggesting it, more likely mr. downey junior was making a joke to keep himself entertained during the countless hours of interviews regarding the film. She’s a moron because she’s trying to pretend she’s not homophobic, and she’s sucks at it. Also, I doubt she’s related to sir arthur conan doyle, I suspect she purchased the rights at some point.

  2. Erik says:

As if you didn’t get enough hints of it in the first one. lol

First thing I did after coming home from the movie was look up Holmes/Watson slash fanfics.

She should loosen up and let them explore the concepts they want to explore.

    • How about this... says:

Maybe people should loosen up. Loosen up and quit trying to push ‘gayness’ into everything Hollywood. And maybe read the actual books instead of fic.

      • Millah says:

Yeah…ppl shouldn’t have any sort of imagination that would just be AWFUL! :P Get over yourself, pushing ‘gayness’ my ass–that movie was so bloody slashable it was just ASKING for fanfiction to be made and ‘squeed’ over. Btw, we push ‘hetness’ onto everything, (seriously, ppl cling to it like their little minds would explode if they could ever consider sex without both a penis and vagina) is it so bad if some ppl took their relationship to be a bit more than friends? I saw it that way, and I loved it! Get the hell over yourself and start moving forward…bitch. :D

ps. I’m so going to go write some hot boylove, and will likely dedicate my next story to you. And yes, this was a childish response, but you know what? Society is insane, this woman sounds like a bloody idiot–if we stopped making things the minute someone mistook them then nothing would ever get done…There will always be someone saying something about one’s creations that the artist super hates. But you need to MOVE ON, like JKR for Harry Potter–she supports the ff that her story inspires, as should this dumb bitch… Man, ranting just feels good.

  3. Nate says:

I just saw Sherlock Holmes a few hours ago and half way through (especially when they were in the outside jail thing) I started wondering if he was gay, but later on he did look like he loved Irene and I’d much rather they’d follow up on that than make him gay but I haven’t read the books or anything so it probably wouldn’t bother me too much either way..

  4. Pasturelands says:

haha. stupid woman, she is. Of course, downey was joking. If they wanted to make SHERLOCK, into Brokeback Mountain II, they will make the “gayness” convincing. As i see it, its just one Playboy (downey) annoying the other Playboy (Law) on set. harhar. Any good viewer can see through the Horseshit of these two comics!!

  5. Gloria says:

SHERLOCK HOLMES was a fast driving suspense thriller with outstanding performances done by Robert Downey, Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams.

One regret…. Rachel McAdams part was too small as she filled the screen with her talents! She played the cat and mouse game with Sherlock Holmes which was intriguing and beguiling.

Jude Law was the quiet one, handsome but reserve, most useful assistant.

Robert Downing was exciting, flashing, and a tad bit of a bad boy.

Rachel McAdams was an outstanding display of talent as you could read her eyes! She left everyone guessing as to her true intentions both in criminal activity as well as her true feelings for Holmes.

Sequels are a given for the combination of all three were perfect chemistry!

Do I wish to see Avatar? No, quite frankly I would prefer to wait for the sequels to the SHERLOCK HOLMES mysteries.

    • Nicole says:

I totally agree with you, Gloria, the movie was brilliant! All the performances were great but sadly, rachel’s role was far to small for her talent AND her magnificent character, Irene Adler.
The sequel will obviously be amazing aswell and hopefully Rachel will have a bigger part to play in it!

  7. Rose Red says:

The only films of Holmes true to the stories are the ones with Jeremy Brett.

If any of you bozos ever read the stories, and I doubt you have, there’s nothing in them to suggest Holmes and Watson are gay. The stories are not great literature and they’re not about Holmes and Watson, they’re about methods used in solving crimes. They were written to be published in serial form in a magazine for mystery/detective buffs. The only thing important in the stories is THE CASE — not Holmes, not Watson, or their relationship with each other or anyone else.

If Holmes is gay, then Susan Boyle is Helen of Troy.

  8. Olson says:

Oh please… Clearly Downy was just busted some balls. You know he is. I can pretty much gaurantee he was kidding… lady needs to chill out.

P.s. Yeah shes totally homophobic though

  9. Anonymous says:

In the books there was sexual tension. I mean, there is obvious evidence. Sherlock loves Watson, and Watson tolerates him. It’s more than ‘bromance’
Granted, I don’t think Robert should have said this, I think it would be up to Guy Richie what will happen, and to introduce further publicity to the next movie.

  10. Rose Red says:

Sexual tension in the stories? There is NO sex in the stories.

  11. shadow says:

this is stupid there was no gay things in there but anyway bring on the sequel

  12. Brennz says:

Dude, whoever wrote this article (whoever “Sock” is) is a complete MORON. Did you even WATCH the Letterman show where he “called Holmes a ‘butch homosexual’”? If you did, I’m sorry for you, having to live a life with such little intelligence and inability to understand humor, or even English. He NEVER said in the show that Holmes was gay, he said he COULD be for all he knows. For Pete’s sake, he was JOKING! You sock, are an embarrassment to this website. First time visit for me, and I’ll not be coming back. Good job.

  13. Gloria says:

Respect the movie SHERLOCK HOLMES for being a great classic. Appreciate the contents, the fast action thriller, outstanding acting, and pray, no, beg for sequels.

Understand actors have a sense of humor and like any other human on the face of this earth should not be held accountable for every error in judgment, or too many times words are taken out of context.

Mr. Downey is a cut above the average actor “star quality” equates to the likes of Humphry Bogart, Gary Cooper, and Cary Grant. He is a brillant genius who has mastered his craft and excels where others attempt to achieve. Give him the allowance to be human and tell a joke without being chastised.

  14. Dom says:

I love the books, I love the Basil Rathbone’s although truly the best versions were the Jeremy Brett ones of course.

I didn’t expect to love the Guy Ritchie but Love it I did and thought it was huge fun complete escapism and actually for all the fussing by die hard fans the characters were much closer than I expected.

However I thought one of the things that worked so well was that there was an undercurrent gay relationship between Holmes and Watson, watch it again and it screams out at you and it completely works in context. Whether they are meant to be or not it doesn;t matter they are definately playing that subtext and it is perfect.

I suspect, although I do not know, that maybe Law and Downey Jr were told to play them that way.

It’s not in the books and certainly not in other versions I have seen but I say fine. She was obviously protecting her back as Hollywood still think that anything “gay” cannot possibly sell to the public and it all has to be closeted.

So even if you are a staunch fan, go and see it and just forget all you know and enjoy it for what it is, a homage to a fantastic eternal character.

  15. Millah says:

Dear Gods and Goddess! This is madness! There better be a sequel, if this dumb chick is too homophobic to get over this one comment, my goodness –she’s just gonna crumble out there in the real world. I’m assuming that Jr. was just messing about, because he’s comfortable in himself and he can see that were was a very special relationship between the two characters. You can feel the sexual tension and the emotions, btw to the person who said something about not being able to have sexual tension because there is NO sex–well, no shit–that’s why there is UST (Unresolved Sexual Tension) rather than hot boy-smex.
I think they both have special places for each other in their hearts, as well as had room for their lady friends. Society’s expectations and their own moral beliefs would have kept them from being able to have any hot love–but don’t worry, us fangirls are now writing them all the loving they can get. I mean, Jr and Law — can anyone say OMFGHOT?!?!

    :D

Another mature comment brought to you by the amazing Millah… muhahaha, well…least I won’t hear any bitching from my friends, they get enough of these random rants as it is.
