final-fantasy-xiiiA Hong Kong games magazine has given Final Fantasy XIII a shocking review score of 4 out of 10 calling it the “biggest swindle in gaming history

They went on to add…

“The game is complete linearity until the open areas near the end,” he says adding, “it’s little more than riding an amusement park ride.”

Here are some of the best bits of the review…

  • “I had heard the opinion that “It’s amazing once you get to Chapter 11,” but why should you spend 20 or 30 hours on a game to get to the only enjoyable part? Just how do they intend to make me play this? Do they think I’m some kind of masochist?”
  • “A button mashing puzzle game with no real strategy or RPG elements and a plethora of annoying features, game as a whole is little more than a digital novel of sorts.”
  • “For such a game to approach 2 million copies sold must be due solely to the strength of the Final Fantasy brand”
  • “biggest joke of 2009″

Anyone out there who agrees?

It’s okay if people don’t like the game, but I’m looking forward to it eagerly. Everybody that is complaining about linearity doesn’t make sense to me. Every final fantasy I’ve played is linear. Yeah, some of the areas are big, but you’re still going from point A to point B. It isn’t as if they’re open-ended worlds. The selling point of Final Fantasy is its story, and it’s easier to tell a story when they can control how you move through it. As for the gameplay, pacing is my biggest worry. I agree that it’s a little strange that they’ve stretched it out so much (you don’t even get a leveling up system until several hours in and you can’t pick who you control in the party) but I’m reconsidering my opinion. I’ve read a couple of opinions about the game that have pointed out that the game feeds you information gradually and makes it really easy to understand. The battle system is actually the most highly praised thing about this game. As always, I’ll wait to play it to make my final judgements, but I’m excited. Most people are comparing it to Final Fantasy 10, and that was my favorite game in the series.

Sounds like he wants it to be more Persona, which is a more open ended JRPG. Final Fantasy has never been particularly open ended.

I didn´t play the game, i only wach the gameplay and all the chapters of FF XIII and i think it amazing. I agreed the game is linear and that is to bad.
But in my opinion who made this review, is not a kind of person who can judge this game or any other. In other words, i will ignore this review.
