Totally Unofficial Top 10/11 Movies Of The Naughties

As it’s the end of the decade, here’s a list of the top ten movies of the naughties. I don’t like the term ‘naughties’, but apparently it’s official. You know what they say though; if you can’t beat them… poison them. I’m well up for mass poisoning. I’ll keep these little opinions short, becuase if I get started, we may end up with essays on each one.
So here’s my top eleven (couldn’t decide on ten) films of the the past ten years.
11. Little Miss Sunshine
The film that made me love Steve Carell and realise that comedy actors can act as well as just do stupid things. Turns out Carell is a genius, though. Brilliant film though, touching and well paced.

10. Kill Bill Vol. 1
Arguably, my favourite directed film of all time. Everything I like about Asian Cinema (just kung fu, really), combined with awesome music and great set-piece shots. Although, every time I watch a QT film, I imagine every line of dialogue spoken out loud by Quentin at his typewriter with a giant grin on his face. Far too many quotable lines in this film.

9. Almost Famous
Crowe captures everything in this film, which is mirrored by its soundtrack. And no, I don’t particularly like Elton John, but there’s a time and a place for him and it’s definitely on Stillwater’s bus.

8. Brokeback Mountain
Because I’m a sucker for ‘love that cannot be‘, as they say. Maybe that’s why I like Cameron so much? But yea, such a subtle film that is poignant and incredible in equal parts. A Western that isn’t really a western, but has been slated by ”common” folk because it features ‘a bunch of gay cowboys‘. Well, to them I say 1; they’re sheep herders, and 2; your favourite film is probably 300; which is full of shirtless men. So fuck off.

7. Batman Begins
The first Batman film in my opinion. I love Clooney and Kilmer. Keaton….not so much. But here, we got a genuine nailzzzz mofo’ in Bale, who when he smacks you, you feel it. A Batmobile that’s a force and aside from a lot of continuity and editing problems, those are ironed out by the next tour-de-force from Nolan.

6. The Bourne Ultimatum
Matt Freakin Damon. Man of the decade if you ask me. TBU was two notches higher than Supremacy and that bit – you know what bit – that linked Supremacy and Ultimatum was the best bit of storytelling of the decade.

5. Erin Brockovich
Chosen purely because Soderbergh can work with actors. And when your actor is Julia Roberts, it’s a treat. I always say this is my favourite piece of work by an actress, but then I always seem to watch….

4. Million Dollar Baby
Far more emotional than Erin Brockovich but still has the same amount of honesty in all its performances. Why Clint never won Best Actor for this is beyond me, but I genuinely do love this film.

3. Ratatouille
Pixar’s finest in my opinion. Bird & Pixar know how to light a city and how to make you care…about a rat… Tremendously. Michael Giacchino knows how to score a film. I’d go as far as to say this is flawless.

2. There Will Be Blood
This houses the greatest piece of acting of all time, alongside some of the best cinematography, alongside some powerful script work. Why this film didn’t win Best Picture is beyond me, because it is quite simply a masterpiece in every way.

1. The Dark Knight
Boom! My favourite film, possibly ever, bookends every collection or list I ever make. TDK is film-making perfection. I’m sure everyone’s seen it, so there’s no need to say anything about it in my shitty-one-line-reviews. But yea, they flip an 18 wheeler for God’s sake. What more can you ask for? As my friend once said “Begins is a Journey, TDK is a ride…” Which is true. In fact, thinking about it has got me all hot and bothered; I’m gonna go watch it on Blu Ray… (after this)

Films that missed out:
The Departed, Into The Wild, A History Of Violence, Stranger Than Fiction, The Fountain, Eastern Promises, Body Of Lies, Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Zodiac and The Changeling.
So yes discuss what you want, I didn’t even check over this (again), I was rushing to get it in. Shame on me. I am boring these days…
