Bi-Weekly Bugle – Issue 6 – I’m Back!
Ok, So I’ve been away for ages, and my last column is still in Griff’s inbox somewhere, so I’ll just move on….
Gears of War 3 was announced today. Hoorah. Who isn’t happy? I don’t care. You’re not important. The teaser is pretty decent, and it features 4 player co-op (yay!) and a double barreled shotgun (boo). With a year to wait, we have Halo Reach to look forward to, unless you’re me and couldn’t care about Halo, so you can get in line at Game with me and get pre-ordering. I’m already booking a week off work for it. I particularly liked the fact that Anya will be included in the game as a playable character. As much as I love Gears, it is entirely a man story, about massive men doing man things with massive guns. Which is awesome, but it’s pretty obvious Anya’s gagging for it with Marcus (…and if you read the books, you’d know this even more), so that’ll be nice. My hopes for this game are HIGH. I want Dom to die. I want Anya to die. I want Marcus to be left on his own. And then like, 1000G’s of attainable achievements, if you don’t mind, Epic Games.
-Kick Ass. I caved and watched it. I know I shouldn’t have, but I did. And it was quite refreshing. It was shot like Spider-Man should have been – or should be – shot, like a comic. It screamed of John Romita Jr (He drew it… and he’s drawn Spider-Man and many other comics), he’s not the best artist in the comic business, but he’s certainly the best story teller, he draws comics like movies; and this was movie was shot like a comic. It wasn’t a story of an ‘ordinary guy’ though, like many people seem to think it is – It’s your typical comic book story (Although I can see the ending was probably darker in the comic, bringing it back to a more ”this is a real kid” story). It did have it’s down points though, some scenes were drawn and boring, with characters I just wanted to smash in the face, and it’ll definitely suffer from fast-forward addiction on DVD, it seemed each great scene was sandwiched in between ones that just made me want to say ‘oi, less of this crap, and let me see that girl hit someone again!’
-A film I’ve been thinking about this week a lot is Up In The Air. I was a fan of it when it came out, but I never thought it was a groundbreaking piece of cinema. But For some reason, it’s been playing in my mind, because of it’s story structure. It’s pretty straight forward in terms of what happens and beats, but it’s just….different. It’s characters, although familiar are unlike
- So far this year, the best film is Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Which was as ball-grabbing and visceral as anything you’ll ever see. Beautifully paced and acted to perfection, it’s only problems are in the fact that sometimes, the subtitles were un-readable because of the background it was shot on. Definitely worth a watch, as it has two sequels coming out in a few months, so if you can check this out: check this out, it is (dare I say it…) Original.
-Polanski’s new film looks cool too, even if he is weird and Pierce Brosnan is in it.
-This week’s Blu-ray choice was Fantastic Mr Fox which is every bit as outstanding as you could possibly imagine. It’s a smile from start to finish.
-I’m forcing myself to watch 24 again. It has become the most boring piece of tv since Lost – But in all fairness to 24 it doesn’t have a time-travelling wheel in a well. Which is a bonus to everything. But yea, 24 was on the rise again after a dire Day 6, with it’s left-field Day 7, but Day 8 has gone back to boring formulaic TV. Who cares? Well, I half do, because it’s the last season, But I know they were ooh’ing and aaah’ing about a ninth, (it’s rating sacked it, inevitably) so I’m gonna assume Jack isn’t going to die if they’re moving into movies. Which is a massive shame. (Please die, Jack….please!)
- House has been suffering the same problems as 24. Season 6 coming back from hiatus a few weeks ago has been….decent, but not House standard great. Both these shows’ formulas have been exhausted now. There’s only so many times Jack can disobey a direct order and get captured… and House can get an epiphany mid sentence over some conversation about the clinic patient’s symptoms… I need more new TV.
-I’ve decided that Wolverine: the game, is no longer a ”movie tie in”, but rather, the movie is called a ”game tie in”, because frankly, the game was better.
It’s April now: Which means Iron Man 2 is at the end of the month. Yes, that’s right. Let’s see if Justin Theroux can write a beast and prove that Tropic Thunder wasn’t just a fluke. Although, Matt Fraction has had creative input on this, and anyone who’s been reading his work on Invincible Iron Man will know that he is, probably, inhuman.
I do have a column on 3D coming, honestly. I started it but I ended up over-thinking and overwriting, so I tried under-thinking but still ended up overwriting. So I wrote something like this (which never got on) so now there’s this….
I’ll try get back on schedule, so if anyone wants me to write about anything, please comment (Although, without Facebook, I can’t pimp out this beast, so no-one’ll be reading) And hopefully, I’ll get something done within the next two weeks.
