Anchorman Director Adam McKay Says That Anchorman 2 Is Close To Happening
One of my favourite movies of all time; Anchorman could be getting a sequel sooner than I expected.
It had long been rumoured that Anchorman 2 was in some sort of development but every time there seemed to be momentum on the project news would come out that they couldn’t get all the actors together and the rumors would die down for another couple of months only to start back up again whenever Will Ferrell had a new movie coming out.
Well guess what, Will Ferrell has a new movie coming out in September called The Other Guys, so naturally there’s been some more talk about Anchorman 2.
This time the sequel’s status update comes from Anchorman director Adam McKay, who by the way, is also the director for the upcoming aforementioned; The Other Guys.
Talking to Empire, McKay revealed that all the cast of 2004’s Anchorman are willing and ready to return for a sequel…
“It’s a tricky movie because everyone went and did really well after it, so everyone’s prices went up and everyone’s time got a little more valuable. But at the same time, graciously, Steve and Paul and everyone agreed to cut their price substantially to come and do the sequel, which you don’t see very often in Hollywood.”
But, and there’s always a but in situations like this, assembling the cast again is all well and good but if the studio is reluctant to make a sequel based on the original’s poor box office return how do you get them to give you a greenlight?
McKay has an answer…
“Austin Powers didn’t make a ton of movie in its first go-round and then it caught fire in the next one. We’re hoping they’ll look more at that sort of projection.”
And what about the plot, earlier rumours suggested that Anchorman 2 would be set in the 80’s…
“That’s loosely what the idea is. It’s more the frame of it. We have this other, bigger, crazier idea that’s really more what it’s about, which I can’t say. Our thinking was there’s just no way the second one is going to be as good as the first, because the first one is the first one. So our idea is if we’re going to do a second one, we better go for it and try some insane stuff and we’ll be enjoying it and that way it can’t be half bad.”
I’m crossing my fingers that this movie happens, I need it…
