Miyamoto Admits That Nintendo Should Get Their Online Act Together – Thinks They May Have To Charge

Gaming God Shigeru Miyamoto has been speaking with Edge Magazine about the need for Nintendo to develop their online business model.

At this moment in time, if you want to play online games on your Wii you can do so free of charge, (albeit if you want to play with your friends you have to suffer those dreadful “friend-codes”) though the service is generally considered to be the weakest of the big three’s (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii) online services.

Miyamoto admitted that Nintendo would have to seriously explore a subscription-based model of their online service in the future…

“Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realize is the core [online] business structure. Do we need to demand customers pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they get some extra value? With these core business strategies, I think we are less active than we should be.”
