Mass Effect The Movie On The Way?
Legendary Pictures and Avi Arad have acquired the movie rights to the hit video game Mass Effect.
The game, which is an Xbox 360 exclusive, sees players take control of Commander Sheppard as he explores the galaxy in his ultra cool spaceship; the Normandy. On his adventures he bumps into every alien-type you can think of from blue aliens to amphibious-based aliens.
The Mass Effect series is renowned for its sprawling storylines and epic scope so any serious movie adaption would have to be written to incorporate sequels.
I Am Legend writer Mark Protosevich has been assigned the rather unenviable task of adapting the massive story into a workable screenplay.
If Mass Effect is going to work as a movie then I believe the studio will have to approach it in much the same way as New Line did with the Lord of the Rings trilogy and prepare themselves for movies which run past the two and a half hour mark.
I get the feeling that Mass Effect will prove to be too ambitious a project for Legendary Pictures and wouldn’t be surprised if it never gets past the script stage.
