Okay, as rumours go this one is a pretty obvious one. Now that Guillermo Del Toro has walked away from his directing duties on the two proposed Hobbit movies, speculation, naturally, has been mounting which suggests that Peter Jackson could return to the franchise to direct. Sort of a “Return of the King” scenario.

Now, personally I don’t think Jackson wants to direct The Hobbit movies, I mean, let’s be honest here; he can only ruin his good work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy if he somehow turns in a pile of crap. (Think; George Lucas)

But, just because he doesn’t want to doesn’t mean that he won’t.

In fact, in a recent interview with The Dominion Post, Jackson said…

“If [directing the films is] what I have to do to protect Warner Bros’ investment, then obviously that’s one angle which I’ll explore…The other studios may not let me out of the contracts.”

Ah, see, he is open to the idea but his wording is all wrong. I don’t want to see Jackson return to Middle Earth just because he HAS to, no, I want to see him return because he WANTS to.

Much better then, for a Neil Blomkamp-type director to come in and make a name for himself. A director of small enough stature where Jackson’s once-considerable bulk could still shadow the production.

But now that the project is officially without a director, what happens next?

Well, fortunately for us Jackson and co. are, for the time being at least; going to carry on regardless…

“We don’t intend to let this affect the progress. Everybody, including the studio, wants to see things carry on as per normal. The idea is to make it as smooth a transition as we can.”
