Maria Sharapova Advances at Wimbledon
At 17, Maria Sharapova won the title at Wimbledon in 2004. Her subsequent years were not as stellar. In 2008, she was beaten in the second round by Russian player, Alla Kudryavtseva, who was ranked 154th.
“My body feels good,” said Sharapova referring to her past shoulder injury. “I’m in much better match condition than I was last year.” So far for 2010, her record stands at 18-5 and she’s got two tournament titles under her belt.
“My joy in the game is pretty up there with what it was before I got injured,” she said in an interview. “Maybe even more so, because it was taken away from me for such a long period of time that it made me realize how blessed you are when you’re actually on the court, are able to hit a tennis ball for an hour a day, and be good at what you do.”
Formerly number 1, Sharapova’s ranking now stands at 17th. She had dropped out of the top 100 while she was nursing her shoulder injury.
