Obama Replaces McChrystal
After a series of disparaging remarks made against certain members of the Obama administration, the President accepted the resignation of General Stanley A. McChrystal who was commander of American forces in Afghanistan.
“I welcome debate among my team, but I won’t tolerate division,” stated the President during his announcement. Once confirmed by the Senate, General David Petraeus will replace McChrystal.
“War is bigger than any one man or woman, whether a private, a general or president,” said Obama. “As difficult as it is to lose General McChrystal, I believe it is the right decision for our national security.”
President Obama said that he did not accept McChrystal’s resignation out of personal insult but because it demonstrated that the general did not meet behavior standards expected of a commander.
The change in leadership in Afghanistan is not representative of any shift in the overall war strategy in the region. “This is a change in personnel, but it is not a change in policy,” he stressed.
