Driving through downtown Manhattan there was no mistaking that it was Gay Pride Day. The multi-colored flags signifying diversity were flying high and draped ubiquitously around 14th Avenue in New York City where the Gay Pride parade passed through.

Traffic was stopped and lined the streets as proud gay men and women joined the parade waving flags. Among the marchers were Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor David Paterson – there to show their support to the gay community.

Three grand marshals were present including Constance McMillen, a lesbian teenager who sued her school district in Mississippi for enacting a policy that banned her attendance to the prom with her same-sex partner.

Today’s other two grand marshals: Lieutenant Dan Choi, a national Guardsman who is openly gay and Judy Shepard, whose son Matthew Shepard was murdered as the result of a hate crime.

The weather cooperated for this most colorful of events. The parade ran down Fifth avenue to where it ended in Greenwich Village.
