The shadow of Wembley was hanging over this match between these two European soccer arch-rivals. England was deprived their second goal, even though the ball had clearly passed the line after it bounced off the crossbar behind the defeated German’s goal keeper Neuer after a header from Degou in the 31st minute.

However, in the scheme of things, the young German team totally dominated their favored opponents and England seemed almost lethargic over long stretches of the match. Klose in the 20th minute, followed by Podolski’s goal in the 32nd, gave Germany a comfortable 2:0 lead.

Before halftime, England revived their hopes through Upson’s goal before halftime. However, Mueller in the 66’ and 69’ shot England out of the tournament.

On the heels of their win, the newly gained self confidence will help the Germans who will now advance to the round of 8 where they will meet with the winner of Argentina-Mexico match.
