The 36th annual Saturn Awards celebrated top works in fantasy, science fiction and horror genres in home video, film and television. Iconic director, James Cameron, took home 10 honors as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, including best writer and best director.

The gala took place at the Castaway restaurant in Burbank, California. Although Avatar did not win an Oscar for best picture of the year, it won a Saturn for this top honor.

Actor nods went to Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, the films lead roles as well as Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang who were named best supporting actress and best supporting actor for their roles.

The Saturn awards began in 1972 and were devised by Dr. Donald A. Reed. He felt that films in these genres were never given the proper level of appreciation that they deserved. The award itself is fashioned after the planet, Saturn, with a surrounding ring of film. The trophy is also known as a Golden Scroll.
