Tony Award winners Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones will co-star in the premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Driving Miss Daisy.” The production, penned by Alfred Uhry, will begin performances on October 7th. The official opening of the production is set for October 25th at the John Golden Theatre, it was reported.

The original off-Broadway production opened in 1987 and in 1989 became a successful movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy. The film, directed by Bruce Beresford, won four Academy Awards. One of the Oscar’s going to Uhry for his screenplay adaptation.

The story is set in 1948 and takes place in Atlanta, Georgia. Daisy Werthan, the title character, is a 72-year-old Jewish widow who lives in her home with her housemaid, Idella. After an auto accident, Daisy is unable to obtain automotive insurance and is forced to hire a chauffeur to take her around. The story explores the racism and prejudices that plagued society at that time in history.
