Unemployment Benefits Running Out for Millions of Jobless
“The reality is that we have the worst job market on record going back to the Great Recession,” policy co-director at National Employment Law Project, Maurice Emsellem, said. “There’s only one job available for every five unemployed workers.”
“For anybody that has a thought in their head that unemployed workers are to blame for their situation, the reality is that workers are struggling hard to find work, but the jobs are just not there.”
On Tuesday, the House shot down an unemployment extension with Senate Republicans blocking it with a 57-14 vote. It is unclear whether or not the Democratic leaders will continue to try to push the bill through before their fourth of July holiday break.
Even if the bill passes, it will only extend filing dates allowing the unemployed to move from one emergency benefit tier to the next. It does not, however, address the issue of long term unemployment. Those who have already exhausted their 99 possible weeks of unemployment insurance will not see a Tier IV benefit extension with the passing of this bill.
