In Poznan, a western city in Poland, a giant poster hangs steps away from a synagogue and in the midst of a bustling city for all to see. The artwork, designed by Italian artist, Max Papeschi, is titled “NaziSexyMouse” and shows the image of Mickey Mouse on the head of a naked woman with a swastika in the background.

Poland carries strong emotions about all of the suffering that took place when the German Nazi regime ruled. The poster, according to the artist, portrays the horrors of the lifestyle Americans live. It is set to be part of a contemporary art exhibition that will be opening in the fall.

City officials want the poster banned. Norbert Napieraj, a member of the city council said, “This art provocation is a form of violence against the sensitivity of many people,”

However, prosecutors disagree. They feel the poster is a work of art and is not in violation of any Polish laws against glorifying Nazism. Since the poster went up it has been twice vandalized.

The director of the gallery over which the poster hangs is determined to keep the poster hung. Maria Czarnecka told The Associated Press, “Art should be provocative and controversial.”
