The Sorcerer’s Apprentice a Bit too Hokey
As a protégé to Merlin himself, Jay Baruchel, battles over time with the great Merlin with two other protégés who are pretty nasty.
Merlin, played by Nicholas Cage, is charismatic, if anything, even if the magic is a bit hokey and silly. Baruchel is endearing in his role as apprentice and comes across as an eager, hyper, somewhat pathetic kid. But, he wins you over with his charm, as does Cage.
“Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is a film from the makers of “National Treasure,” produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Jon Turteltaub, “Apprentice” sort of pays homage. But, its effects are not great and the storyline is a bit less sophisticated.
Cage’s last couple of movies have been less memorable than his early roles such as his dark portrayal in “Leaving Las Vegas” for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1995. If you haven’t seen this movie, you should check it out.
