According to Bleeding Cool, Star Trek star Karl Urban will play Judge Dredd in the upcoming movie reboot based on the cult comic book character.

The new Judge Dredd movie has been in the works for a while now. A couple of months back it was announced that The Beach and 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland was penning the screenplay while Vantage Point director Pete Travis would direct but since then news on the project has been thin on the ground.

Until now. With a proposed 2012 release date being thrown about, which means that they are going to have to go into production pretty soon, it was only a matter of time before the rumours started.

Anyway, according to Bleeding Cool; Urban is up for the role as the world’s most ruthless lawmaker and the best thing about their “scoop” is the part where they state that unlike in Stallone’s Judge Dredd; Dredd will never take off his helmet.

Hopefully this is more than a rumour and Urban gets the part because no matter how hard I try, I can’t think of anyone better.
