Bartoli and Sharapova reach quarterfinals of Bank of the West Classic
Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, France’s Marion Bartoli and Maria Sharapova have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic Tennis tournament on Thursday. The tournament is a welcomed opportunity for the players to work on their game in order to get in shape for the upcoming U.S. Open at the end of August.
Bartoli, the fourth-seeded, beat the world’s number one Ana Ivanovic in two straight sets with 6-3, 6-4, and can now look back on eight consecutive wins at this event, with 10 wins out of her last 13 matches.
Bartoli attested herself a great match and a good build up for the U.S. Open. Another former world number one, Maria Sharapova (fifth-seed), beat Olga Govortsova of Belarus with 6-3 and 6-3. Sharapova was satisfied with her performance, except for the first game which she called a ‘sloppy one’.
American Melanie Oudin lost in two sets to Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-1, but was overall not disappointed with the tournament.
