Can Zac Efron shake the “High School Musical” golden boy image and sink his teeth into a more introspective role. If he can, he doesn’t show it in the new release “Charlie St. Cloud.” While Efron’s boyish charm and movie-star good looks can get him through a fluff piece like “High School Musical,” it doesn’t translate to a deeper performance.

Efron plays a competitive sailor in a small town who is in a car crash that kills his younger brother. With the loss of his brother, comes the loss of his own spirit and drive. He cannot let go of his brother and imagines meeting him in the woods to play catch where they always did when he was alive. Unfortunately, when Efron attempts agony and despair, it doesn’t work. It is more like blank stares with no depth.

Efron does have talent and can sing and dance with the best of them. However, in order to break out of the teen idol mold, he needs take on roles where he can truly test his ability.
