“Dinner for Schmucks” took a back seat to the dream thriller “Inception” this weekend. This leaves “Inception” as ruler of the box office for the third week in a row. It was not only top box office in the U.S., “Inception” ruled internationally as well.

“Schmucks” took in $23.3 million in the U.S. and Canada between Friday and Sunday putting it in second place in box office gross for the weekend. It was not enough to overturn the current box officer ruler, which took in $27.5 million in ticket sales. The earnings were in line with Carell’s other recent opening, “Date Night” with Tina Fey, which brought in $25 million in its opening weekend.

Viacom vice president for distribution, Don Harris, was reportedly not disappointed with the opening of “Dinner for Schmucks.” He called the opening solid. According to Harris, the film was marketed more at men, but women seemed to like it better.
