President Obama gave words of support on Friday for a proposal to construct an Islamic center and mosque in close proximity to ground zero, site of the World Trade Center disaster of September 11, 2001. The President said that it is the right of Muslims to practice their religion in the United States just as any other religious group.

The comments made by the President were quickly praised by New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg. The mayor already had given his support to the project. He compared the speech Obama made on the controversial project to a letter written by George Washington. The letter was in support of a congregation for Jews in Newport, Rhode Island. In the letter, Washington states that we “all possess alike liberty.”

Critics of the mosque have been quick to criticize Obama’s words saying that he chose to be politically correct. Peter King, Republican from New York, said that the Muslim community is insensitive to build a place of worship so close to where so many innocent people lost their lives.

One Response to “Obama Supports NYC Mosque”
  1. When I hear detractors of the “ground zero mosque” cry out about the sensibilities of the victims’ families, I wonder “which victims?” Thousands were murdered or injured and tens of thousands more directly affected. Surely, no single group speaks for all of them. My point is that “victims” is not monolithic group. Yes, there are some that are against the mosque, but there are some that support it and others that are indifferent.
