Sony Pictures has announced that the title character of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ will be played by Rooney Mara. The relatively unknown actress will portray Lisbeth Salander in the big screen adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s popular novel.

When the team was scouting for a lead actress, reports say that they would not consider anyone taller than 5 feet 5 inches or over the age of 24. They wanted her to truly embody the vision that Larsson had of the visual appearance of Lisbeth. In his book, he describes her as a 24-year-old woman who sometimes could look as if she were 14. They also were looking for someone who was not widely known. These requirements were the reason why more high-profile actresses were not considered.

Set to begin production next month in Sweden, Mara will co-star with Daniel Craig in the film adaptation. David Fincher, who also directed the upcoming ‘The Social Network’ in which Mara had a role, will be leading the production.
