Nadia Petrova in 2010 Pilot Pen Open final
Nadia Petrova will meet top-seed Caroline Wozniacki in Saturdays’ 2010 Pilot Pen tennis tournament final. The world’s number 19, who entered the event through a wildcard at the very last minute, managed to oust Maria Kirilenko in three sets with 2-6, 6-2 and 6-2.
When the match started, everything seemed to go according to plan for the highly favored Kirilenko. She broke her opponent twice in the first set, but later on after the match, explained in an interview that she already felt a pain in her back whenever she tried to reach a ball.
In the second set she had to take a medical timeout and visibly had a hard time moving after that.
Petrova noticed her opponent’s limited ability to position herself for her shots, and took advantage of the situation by serving into the corners and keeping up the pressure on Kirilenko by making her run for the balls.
Petrova benefited from Ana Ivanovic’s withdrawal from the event due to an ankle injury.
