In the second set he converted the only break opportunity into a win which won him the match. In an interview after the match, the Ukrainian told the press that he was lucky on his first break point by guessing correctly where de Bakker was going to play his serve to. Therefore, he was in the right position to attack the return and take the break.

The other semifinal was played between Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan and the Serb Viktor Troicki. In a close match with many ups and downs, Istomin prevailed in three sets 7-6, 3-6 and 6-2.

Istomin said that he had difficulties seeing the ball because it came out of the sun into the shadows. It took him two sets to adjust to the situation, but then in the third he had found his timing and was able to take the match.
