The Wire star Idris Elba, who played Russell ‘Stringer’ Bell on the hit TV show, has been talking to USA Weekend about his role in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming Marvel superhero movie Thor.

Elba plays Heimdall, who according to the Marvel Studios Thor Wiki is a Sentry of Asgard and has the…

“Typical powers of an Asgardian god, including superhuman strength, stamina, and durability. He also possesses superhuman senses, most notably his vision and hearing. His senses are said to be so acute that he could hear sap running through trees and see events occurring miles away. Heimdall also briefly possessed the Odinpower, which granted him the power to channel cosmic energies.”

In the interview with USA Weekend, Elba was asked what he thought was the coolest part of filming Thor to which he replied…

“Just the bigness of the show. It’s so epic, these huge sets were just amazing to look at. And they really pay attention to detail. When you read the comics, you see all the drawings, and to actually see them in real life, it’s like, “Whoa!”

Elba then revealed that he has signed a four-picture commitment with Marvel Studios…

“I have a deal with the Marvel Studios team, a four-picture commitment. I’m sure I’ll be back in something cool.”

Thor is scheduled for release in 2D and 3D on May 6, 2011.

I think Idris will make a great Heimdall and I can hardly wait to see the Thor movie.

I believe the movie will be a great success and that there is interest out there far beyond the traditional comic book fan base.

As an Aussie science fiction writer I’ve been a Marvel Thor fan since the original Journey into Mystery of August 1962.
