BP is taking steps on Monday to begin a permanent seal for the damaged well that spilled oil into the Gulf of Mexico for over 100 days. Since temporarily plugging the well over three weeks ago with mud and cement, the well has ceased to leak oil.

Retired Admiral Thad Allen, responsible for the response of the government to the disaster said that crews will begin to remove the capping stack that has been trapping flowing oil since July.

“We will attempt to pull it free, and we are prepared to apply up to 80,000 [pounds] of force in addition to the weight of the blowout preventer to lift it. We call this the gentle tug.”

Once a permanent fixture is put into place, permanent sealing of the well with a bottom kill procedure (where cement and mud are pumped in from below) will take several days.
