Horror scores at the box office
With the summer coming to a close, horror made a debut at the box office. And, a big debut it was. “The Last Exorcism” took the top honors over the weekend raking in an estimated $21.3 million.
The Eli Roth scary movie edged out “Takers” which demonstrated a solid opening. There was a narrow margin of $300,000 difference between the two top movies with the heist thriller opening to a $21 million gross.
“The Expendables” fell to third place over the weekend after leading the box office for the past two weeks. The action movie dropped 44 percent to take in $9.5 million bringing its total gross in 17 days to $82 million.
“Eat Pray Love” was down 42 percent with an estimated $7 million gross bringing this Julia Roberts girly flick in at fourth place.
Rounding out the top five is the ever funny “The Other Guys.” Dipping 35 percent in box office sales, it brought in $6.6 million, raising its total gross up to $99.3 million.
