Acclaim Is Dead Again

We’re a bit late on this one but I stumbled upon the news this morning that former video game publisher Acclaim has closed down…again.

The company first went bankrupt back in 2004 but was then re-opened when Howard Marks, the former CEO of Activision bought the rights to the name and changed it slightly to Acclaim Games, then he started a new company which focused on a series of online-based games and then, earlier this year, Playdom bought Acclaim Games.

And that’s where the story comes to an untimely end…

If you pop on over to their website you’ll see a notice which reveals that Acclaim are no more. They have ceased trading. In effect, they are dead.

Some of my favourite games of all time were published by Acclaim and to honour those titles and Acclaim’s greatness, allow me to bullet-point some of the games that have a special place in my heart. Cue the trumpets…

  • Burnout – Xbox
  • Extreme G – Nintendo 64
  • Bust A Move 2 – Playstation
  • D – Sega Saturn
  • Legends of Wrestling – Xbox
  • Mortal Kombat – Sega Genesis
  • Mortal Kombat 2 – Sega Genesis
  • NBA Jam – Sega Genesis
  • Shadowman – Nintendo 64
  • Smash TV – Nes
  • South Park – Nintendo 64
  • The Simpsons: Bart vs The Space Mutants – Nes
