Debbie Gibson looks at the popstars of today
Former popstar, Debbie Gibson, whose hits “Only In My Dreams,” “Shake Your Love,” and “Foolish Beat” were the ubiquitous sounds of the late 1980s says that she bucked the peer pressure and kept it real similar to Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne today.
Gibson says when she was first starting out, “they were all like ‘put her in a little black dress and put on heels’. They were trying to vamp me up because it’s an easier sell. I always said ‘I’m not comfortable with that. That’s not me, let the other girls do that.’” Gibson said during an interview.
She compares herself to a couple of the popular women of pop today and their individuality. “I look at Avril Lavigne or I look at Taylor Swift. You know, they still wear high-tops with their gown to an award show. That was me.”
Gibson says that once you have the image of a sex kitten, it is difficult to live it down and it effects how the public perceives you for years to come.
