Robin Soderling and his 2010 U.S. Open first round struggle
Robin Soderling made it into the second round of the 2010 U.S. Open. Barely! His opponent Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer, the 214th in the world, almost caused a major upset.
Soderling started the Open as 5-seeded and today he could not really count on one of his biggest weapons, his strong serve. He committed a total of 13 double faults. His opponent hit 34 aces, Soderling only 9.
As the match started, everything went according to plan for the Swede who took the first two sets and had even match points in the third. However, the rookie from Austria fought back hard and hit his serves with speeds up to 134 mph.
Haider-Maurer is 23-years old and made his Grand Slam debut today. But after battling over five sets, Soderling prevailed with 7-5, 6-3, 6-7, 5-7, 6-4 and made it into the next round.
