Darren Aronofsky Reveals Why Walked Away From Robocop Reboot

Way back in 2008 the internet was full of reports which revealed that The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky was going to reboot the Robocop franchise. Fast forward a year later and the news that Aronofsky had withdrawn from the project hit Robocop fans hard. Aronofsky went on to direct the Black Swan while all the talk of a Robocop reboot died down and now the franchise finds itself stuck in development hell.

It was thought that Aronofsky walked away from the project due to the demands from MGM to make the movie in 3D but, in a recent interview with MTV, Aronofsky revealed that he didn’t walk away because he didn’t want to do Robocop in 3D, he walked away due to MGM’s precarious financial situation which has been well documented over the last year or so. Here’s what Aronofsky said…

“The studio is in question, as everyone knows, with ‘The Hobbit’ and all that stuff, and ‘Black Swan’ was ready to go. It just became an easy decision.”

Aronofsky then stressed that he is not against 3D technology at all and that if the right project came along he would be happy to make a 3D movie…

“With the right project, I’m totally into 3D. Scorsese’s working in 3-D [on The Invention of Hugo Cabret]. I am very curious what that’s going to be. Like everyone, I thought Avatar was an incredible experience. I’m also interested in what someone like John Waters would do in 3D. That’s when it starts to become interesting, when you start to see it used in very interesting, different ways. There is a backlash at this point, and I think that’s just because it’s been overexposed, but that’s just because people are rushing to bank in on it. There’s no doubt that interesting things are going to be done in 3D.”
