Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions – Where Are The Reviews?

Advertisement:

It is only a couple of days until Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions lands on the shelf of your local video game store (the 7th of September actually) and strangely, with just over two days to go there is not one review of the game online.

Obviously, that could change by the time you get around to reading to this article but normally, when games are kept from reviewers this close to release day it doesn’t usually bode well for the game’s quality.

I could be wrong and to be honest I hope I am but see, thing is, I want to buy this game on day one but there is no way I am going to stump up my hard earned on a game that I haven’t read a review for.

Anyway, check out the launch trailer for Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, as trailer goes it ticks all the right boxes but without some reviews to accompany it it’s simply window dressing to me.

    Thanks Meta. I agree, Eurogamer Edge are solid. Didn’t know that about Game Informer though but will keep that in mind from now on. Thanks.

    @Griff
    First of all, Game Informer are one of the most generous game “publications” out there; they are ready to give a “A+” review to any game that’s advertised in their “magazine”. If you want a truly unbiased review, wait for Eurogamer or Edge.

    @Matt
    No, that’s not true at all. Reviews of games come out in the weeks prior to the game’s release; this is common practice, unless a game publisher decides to take the undemocratic and positively vile step of limiting the reviews completely, until after the game is released. That’s not how an educated, modern, civilized society is supposed to act. Activision have never proven to do that.

    Nice one. Looks like I’ll be buying it this weekend. Only problem I’ve got is that if the publisher knew that Spider-man Shattered Dimensions was pretty solid why not allow some outlets to release their reviews a week earlier? I mean, had I read the gameinformer review last week I would have placed a last minute pre-order and I could have been playing it right now.
    I could understand the media blackout if the game was a pile of crap but it actually sounds pretty decent, why do you think the publishers do this?

    I have to say I agree, if Activision wants to keep it hush hush, that is not a good sign for the game because I am really looking forward to it. Also, if it is supposed to be the revolutionary spider-man like arkham was for Batman they aren’t doing a good job because arkham was reviewed over a week before it came out. Also, uncharted was reviewed by ign three weeks before it came out. Sure I watched that review a billion times and wished the game had come out sooner but still knowing how well it did just helped me out, even though I was already going to buy it.
    However, there hasn’t been a good spider-man game since the two originals on the PS1 and I have to say I didn’t mind Spider-man 1 the movie game because even though web-slinging wasn’t fun, it did have a good story. Now all the other games likes ultimate, spider-man 2 and 3, and web of shadows have only focused on good swinging without a great game. I mean Ultimate was so freaking short and the movie games were bad because the side quests were repetitive. Also, for people who say web of shadows was good, are you retarded? That game like I said had great swinging but a terrible story, with bad dialogue and repetitive missions where you mainly fought street thugs.
    So I am worried that there haven’t been reviews since in this day and age games get reviewed early, although the majority of the ones are good and maybe because they know they made a good product they let them which begs the question is Beenox or Activision even confident? I am also worried about the length more than anything because I will be pissed if I put $60 into a game that I finish in two days. I mean that is what I did with ultimate and was taken in by the stupid developers diaries saying how long it took to make it and other shit.

    actually there is a review on gameinformer.com about spiderman shattered dimensions it gave the game a 8.5 so its probally a good game

    Have you ever waited for a game to come out before? Reviews go up day of release as embargoes don’t allow press to release reviews beforehand (unless they are told they can release the review earlier).

    I think Activision specifically forced reviewers & game publications not to publish any reviews of the game prior to release; from what I have seen of such actions (Take 2 did the same thing with Mafia II), journalists have already reviewed the game but Activision are simply not allowing them to publish the reviews. This is, like you said, cheap tactics to prevent pre-orders for the game being canceled, but this is even more extreme than steps taken by other publishers (Take 2) in the sense that not one review, published or even online, has surfaced. This is, like you said, ominous and hints that the game may not receive positive reviews. Regardless, a poor and shambolic decision from Activision; this is awful business ethics and tantamount to things like price fixing and corporate greed.
